Pets as Therapy - Barry and Bella's Story

Barry served for almost 14 years with 14th/20th Kings Hussars, Royal Armoured Corp. Several years after leaving he was diagnosed with CPTSD, symptoms of which are depression, anxiety, great sadness and anger.

Barry adopted Bella when she was only 20 weeks old. She'd had a rough start in life and was extremely fearful but after several weeks they found they were exactly what each other needed to help them heal.

Barry's days were happier, he had purpose and felt calmer while Bella learned to trust people as a result of the love she was now receiving.

Barry knew that he needed to share Bella's healing and therapeutic qualities with others and at 9 months of age, she passed her Pets as Therapy assessment with flying colours. This enabled the 'dynamic duo' to work within the community, supporting people on hospital wards, within Intensive Care Unit, A&E and Palliative Care. Bella also began accompanying children to the operating theatre, her presence helping the child (and their parents) to feel less anxious.

As Barry's assistance dog, the pair have become part of the clinical team at Combat Stress, helping Veterans to relax and feel a sense of calm before starting their counselling sessions.

Bella and Barry are established members of the Blue Van Veterans Drop in Centre. Bella loves people and appears to have an empathy for those feeling vulnerable, sad or anxious, therefore perfectly placed along side the other amazing team members, in welcoming new Veterans through the Blue Van doors, enabling their experience to be a positive step forward.
